Copper Clawfoot Bathtubs: Frequently Asked Questions

What type of faucet should I pair with a copper clawfoot tub?

Certain models of tub faucets are designed specifically for freestanding clawfoot tubs, including wall mount clawfoot tub faucets and floor mount clawfoot tub fillers. Before buying a faucet for your copper clawfoot bathtub, you’ll want to consult the installation/owner’s manual for your tub model. This documentation will provide important details about your copper clawfoot bathtub's compatibility with plumbing fixtures and components including tub faucets.

Clawfoot tub faucets are available in a variety of styles and finishes, including polished chrome, brushed nickel, brushed gold, and matte black. Clawfoot tub faucets with warm finishes, such as oil-rubbed bronze and polished brass, are often chosen to complement the warm, rich color of a copper clawfoot bathtub. Some clawfoot tub faucets are also available with a polished copper or antique copper finish if you’d like to try a monochromatic look.  Both sleek, modern clawfoot tub fillers and vintage style clawfoot tub faucets are available to pair with your copper clawfoot tub.

What is a hand hammered copper tub?

Hand hammered copper tubs are prized for their rustic yet refined vintage look. Hand hammered copper tubs are meticulously shaped and crafted by hand, to achieve a distinctive texture and unique vintage look.

A hand hammered copper tub is made from copper that has been shaped and textured by hand using an artisanal hammering technique. By repeatedly striking copper by hand with a hammering tool, the copper develops a textured, dimpled appearance. Usually, only the exterior of a hand hammered copper tub is textured, while the interior remains shiny and smooth. Hand hammered copper bathtubs have a unique, handcrafted appearance that adds character to a luxury bathroom.

What is antique copper?

Copper changes color as it ages. New copper has a distinctive bright pinkish-orange or reddish-orange color. This color can darken over time to a beautiful reddish-brown or bronze hue due to oxidation and exposure to moisture and air.

Many of the copper clawfoot bathtubs that we carry in our online store have an antique copper finish. Antique copper is copper that has been treated so it develops a somewhat aged or oxidized appearance. Antique copper is darker than shiny new copper; it has a rich, warm reddish-brown color.

Do copper clawfoot bathtubs turn green?

Copper clawfoot tubs have a “living finish” that will develop a natural patina over time. Copper changes from pinkish-orange to dark reddish-brown to blue-green or brilliant verdigris green as it ages (due to exposure to air, water and other elements). A copper tub will eventually develop a beautiful light verdigris green or blue-green color as it ages over the course of many years. However, you can choose to maintain the original color and finish of your copper clawfoot tub with proper maintenance and care. Is soaking in a copper clawfoot tub good for you?

Like other types of clawfoot tubs, relaxing in a copper clawfoot bathtub can help improve relaxation as well as your overall mental and physical health. Copper, however, is a particularly exceptional material for a soaking tub. Copper has excellent thermal conductivity, which helps it retain heat well. This allows for longer, warmer soaks without needing to constantly add more hot water to your bath. In addition, copper has natural antimicrobial properties, which means it can help reduce the presence of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in your bath water. This can lead to a cleaner, safer bathing environment, and may even contribute to better skin health.

Is a copper clawfoot bathtub worth it?

While a copper clawfoot tub is a considerable investment in your home, we believe that a copper clawfoot bathtub is absolutely worth the price for anyone looking for a luxurious fixture that can serve as the focal point of their bathroom.

Copper clawfoot bathtubs combine beauty and function. Copper is a natural material that’s prized for its warm, rich color; corrosion resistance and longevity; and antimicrobial and heat retention properties. Copper’s living finish ensures your tub will become uniquely beautiful as it ages. And copper clawfoot tubs that are properly cared for and maintained can last for decades!
