Why a Copper Bathtub is Timeless, Natural Luxury (and Worth the Investment)

Copper is one of the best natural materials available for your bathroom. In fact, copper has been used for various applications, including bathtubs, for thousands of years.

Prized for their aesthetics, durability, corrosion resistance, and antimicrobial and heat retention properties, copper bathtubs are a timeless, luxury bathroom fixture. That’s why copper tubs have been used by everyone from Marie Antoinette to Kirsten Dunst (who once portrayed Ms. Antoinette on film).

Early copper bathtubs were often handcrafted and featured intricate designs and ornate embellishments. Today, copper bathtubs are still popular due to their unique aesthetic appeal and natural properties. Modern artisans continue to create stunning copper bathtubs that combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary designs, allowing homeowners to enjoy the beauty and functionality of this timeless natural material. Contemporary copper bathtubs are typically handmade and hand-hammered to increase the strength of this sought-after metal.

Why Choose a Copper Bathtub?

A copper bathtub provides a timeless, romantic aesthetic that adds warmth and charm to any space.

Copper is a durable material that can last for decades when properly maintained. Due to its exceptional resistance to corrosion and rust, copper is often used to craft beautiful, rustic-style sinks and soaking tubs. Copper simply contains too little iron to rust!

Copper's living finish is a unique characteristic that distinguishes it from most other metals. Over time, as copper reacts with the environment, it develops a patina—a brown to blue-green gloss or sheen that gradually forms on the surface of the metal, which is produced by oxidation. Copper’s natural patina process typically starts with shades of brown, transitioning to various hues of green to bluish green (aka verdigris) over a long period of time.

This intriguing transition from copper’s original reddish-brown hue to a range of rich turquoise greens and blues is one of copper’s most unique and prized features. However, while some may appreciate copper’s visually compelling natural patina for the sense of history and character it imparts, others might choose to maintain the original shine and color of their tub through regular polishing.

Types of Copper Bathtubs

Copper bathtubs are available in a wide range of sizes and styles including copper Japanese soaking tubs, copper slipper tubs, and drop-in copper tubs. However, most copper bathtubs are freestanding style tubs.

Luxury Freestanding Tubs offers a line of premium copper freestanding bathtubs by top brands like Barclay and Whitehaus Collection. Popular designs include freestanding double-ended copper bathtubs, copper double-slipper tubs, and copper clawfoot tubs.

Copper bathtub designs vary. Most copper bathtubs provide a romantic look though more minimalist and modern designs are also available. Copper tubs with decorative rings provide a more traditional or rustic aesthetic.

If you are interested in purchasing a copper bathtub with a more developed patina, look for an antique copper tub. Some artisans and manufacturers use techniques to speed up the natural aging process of copper. This typically involves applying chemicals or solutions that promote oxidation.

Black copper tubs, which have been treated or oxidized to develop a deep brownish-black patina, are also available. Black copper pedestal tubs provide a stunning, modern look that complements nearly any bathroom design.

Luxe copper bathtub designs include the Barclay Galileo Double Slipper Copper Freestanding Tub. This unique luxury copper tub is constructed out of thick 16 gauge copper with a mirrored mosaic exterior, hammered nickel interior, and aged antique copper pedestal base.

How Much is a Copper Bathtub? Is a Copper Bathtub Worth the Investment?

Copper is a premium material, so naturally copper bathtubs tend to be more expensive than other bathtub options. The cost includes not only the material itself but also the expert level of craftsmanship required to shape and finish a copper tub.

The cost of a copper bathtub varies widely and is based on several factors, including the size, design, brand, and any additional features or customization options. Copper bathtubs typically cost anywhere from $3,000 to $7,000. However, some high-end custom copper bathtubs sell for $15,000 or more!

While copper bathtubs are a luxury item, they are still quite affordable. Luxury Freestanding Tubs offers some of the most reasonably priced yet high quality copper bathtubs on the market. Copper Bathtub: Pros & Cons

Copper tubs are durable, naturally beautiful, and resistant to corrosion and rust. However, they are also a bit more expensive than acrylic tubs. Because copper is a softer material than acrylic, copper bathtubs are easier to scratch and dent. Copper bathtubs are not the best option for people who enjoy using bath bombs or other bath additives in their tub!

Hard water and minerals in the water can cause staining on the copper surface over time. Regular cleaning and maintenance is required to prevent these stains from becoming permanent.

Copper bathtubs can also be quite heavy due to the density of the metal. Proper installation and reinforcement of the bathroom floor may be necessary to support the weight of the tub.

How to Clean & Maintain a Copper Bathtub

To ensure your copper tub stays in excellent condition, you will need to clean it gently on a regular basis (preferably right after each bath that you take). Use warm water and a mild soap to gently clean your copper bathtub. Use a soft cleaning cloth instead of a brush. Abrasive cleaning products and brushes should always be avoided as they can damage the surface of your copper bathtub.

Drying your copper bathtub with a soft cloth after each use is recommended to prevent water spots from forming on the surface. Use soft water in your copper tub, when possible, to minimize mineral buildup. To avoid damaging your copper tub, don’t use bath salts or bath bombs.

Regular applications of carnauba or beeswax can be utilized to seal and safeguard the exterior of your copper tub. Polishing the interior of a copper tub once a month with olive oil can also create a barrier that slows down patina development. After applying the olive oil, use a clean, dry cloth to buff the surface of the tub. This will help remove any excess oil and create a smooth, polished finish. Note: some copper tubs may be lined in a contrasting material such as acrylic or nickel. These materials do not develop a patina.

If your tub has developed unwanted patina, you can occasionally use a copper polishing cream to gently polish the exterior of your tub. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
